Joshua Brown, a middle school teacher from Des Moines Public Schools, was elected president of the Iowa State Education in April of 2024.
Joshua first became active in leadership within ISEA as part of the student program while attending Simpson College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and religion with minors in secondary education and philosophy. He continued his education at Morningside College, earning his Master of Arts in teaching and an endorsement in special education.
Joshua has served the association in many local, state, and national roles. At the local level, he served as president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, middle school representative, and building representative, and he chaired the negotiations, professional learning, and membership committees. He served on many other union and district committees. At the state level, he served as the ISEA vice-president from 2018-2024, the ISEA representative on the NEA Board of Directors from 2013-2018, and the ISEA representative on the NEA Resolutions Committee from 2011-2013. At the national level, Joshua was elected by local leaders from across the nation to be the National Council of Urban Education Associations (NCUEA) central director from 2012-2018. NEA Board of Directors members elected him to serve on the NEA Strategic Plan and Budget Committee from 2014-2018.
In addition to serving the association, Joshua enjoys spending time with his wife, Anna, a science teacher, and his son. Joshua and his family enjoy musical theatre,
and he hopes to catch as many Iowa high school musical theatre productions as possible while visiting schools and local association members. Joshua can be
