Eating disorders present a debilitating condition that has increased in all strata of society and age groups dramatically over the years. Eating disorders can impact infants, children, teens and adults. They can reach both men and women; although many eating disorders have been found to be experienced by more women than men. Mortality rates for individuals with an eating disorder are much higher than those in the general population and medical costs are significantly increased. Eating disorders impact quality of life and place burdens on families, education, employment and society.

This class will explore the signs and symptoms of eating disorders, the red flags teachers and parents should be aware of, and the struggles people with eating disorders endure. Information will be presented on how educators need to react to students who display symptoms of eating disorders and how to build a safe and supportive network. Each individual eating disorder type will be explored highlighting symptoms, treatment and what educators can do to help the child/teen with an eating disorder. Videos of professionals explaining these corrosive disorders will be presented along with videos of people who have experienced, or are experiencing the condition.

Strategies, approaches, techniques and interventions will be discussed on how to remediate and support the child/teen who suffers from an eating disorder within the classroom and home setting.

Organization
Exploring: Eating Disorders: Life’s Silent Killers is a 3 credit (45 hour) Iowa license renewal course. It is self-study and self-paced to be completed within an 8 week window. Students will work independently engaging in lessons, accessing videos and completing quizzes. An instructor will always be on hand to ask questions of, to confer with, or offer technical support.

  2. Understand the different types of eating disorders that impact children and teens.
  3. Identify signs & symptoms of eating disorders in students.
  4. Know & be able to implement classroom strategies and support students with eating disorders.

Grading
This is a 3 credit (45 hour) Iowa license renewal only course. Grading is Pass/Fail. Students are required to pass all quizzes with scores of 80% or better to receive a Pass grade and receive credit.
