This course is designed for facilitated conversations and learning from the book Cultivating Genius: An Equity Framework for Culturally and Historically Responsive Literacy (2020) by Gholdy Muhammad, Scholastic, Inc.

Award-winning researcher Dr. Ghouldy Muhamad presents a teaching and learning model that is shaped by the brilliance of African American literary societies. The four-part framework is a natural next step for educators looking to transform their pedagogies and classroom spaces. This framework- identity, skills development, intellect, and criticality- is essential for all students, especially students of color, who traditionally have been marginalized by learning standards, government policies, and school/ teaching practices. Dr. Muhammad offers a blend of pedagogical approaches that revolutionize teaching and learning across grade levels and content areas. Throughout the course, educators will learn how to design historically responsive learning goals and lesson plans that put her innovative research into practice- even within the curriculum resources you are required to use.
